Paul Ofstedal

Two of our original founders, Paul Martinson and Paul Ofstedal have now died. Their enduring original vision was amended to openly state:

The purpose of CSV is to provide readiness to act upon opportunities to share the boundless love of Jesus Christ, through the gospel and service, among the Chinese people worldwide by partnering with individuals and groups who are committed and dedicated to this goal.
To achieve this goal, we offer:
Personal enrichment materials for study on China — culture and language, early missionary histories and writings, mission conferences, prayer groups, travel tours, periodic webinars with venture partners, and
The exchange of personnel and resources to further this goal in partnership with other organizations who further this goal, and
Work for the welfare of the Chinese people, including those in our midst.

We closed our Representative Office in Xinyang, Henan.

The current pandemic and state of geopolitical tensions warranted the closure of our Xinyang Representative Office.

The scope and locus of our work was significantly curtailed by Chinese Government restrictions (cf. China’s Zero-Tolerance Covid Lockdown Policy & Further Restrictions of Western Presence and Influence policies). Our hearts are still in Henan Province, where Lutheran Missionaries worked in the 1900’s up to World War II. We remain open to returning when conditions improve. In the meantime, we provided for our former staff and friends. Several migrated to new partner organizations. Others received support for retraining for other pursuits.

Our licensure under the Chinese Law Governing Foreign Non-Government Organizations (2017) prohibited and criminalized any missionary endeavors. We respectfully abided by the law by offering humanitarian service to the rural poor of Henan. As of Jan. 1, 2023 our 5-year licensure to operate in Henan expires. Rather than reapply, we decided to shift the focus of our work elsewhere and closed our representative office in Henan. China Service Ventures (USA); however, remains open and operating!
